macOS 10.13.6 requires a software update to recognize iOS 12.1?

My mid-2014 13 inch MacBook Pro running macOS 10.13.6 displays a dialog reading "A software update is required to connect to [my iPhone]. Would you like to download and install this update now?" when I connect my iPhone 5S running iOS 12.1. Photos recognizes this iPhone, but iTunes does not.

What is required to use iTunes with my iPhone running iOS 12?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

After obtaining access to a broadband connection, I recreated the original conditions i.e. connecting the iPhone to the MacBook Pro in question. When I did as suggested and began the software update, a dialog appeared indicating a download was in progress. No indication as to what was being downloaded and then installed so it was a little alarming. After the download and install completed, I checked the install.log in the Console app. It appears "MobileDeviceOnDemand-1.0.0.0" was downloaded and installed.

iTunes 12.8.0.150 running on macOS 10.13.6 once again recognizes my iPhone 5S running iOS 12.1 - at least it shows up in the sidebar of iTunes, I haven't done extensive testing.

I do wish I had been provided with information regarding what the system was about to do prior to the software update beginning, but it all seems to have ended okay.
